The idea of different kinds of animals getting along has a strong appeal, to the point where it’s been built into many of our fairy tales. In fact, considering how much images like this one speak to us, I can’t help but wonder why we don’t do a better job of taking care of other animals and their ecosystems.

In 2015 I painted another squirrel monkey, and I’ve made my share of multi-species art over the years: everything from this man and cat portrait to illustrations like this one for my book about questioning copyright.
