The curlew sandpiper is very social, often forming flocks with other related species, and its lifecycle is also tied to that of a very different animal: the lemming. The population of this small arctic rodent fluctuates widely, so, every four years, a massive migration of lemmings diverts the focus of the bird’s usual predators.
