For many reasons, this pup is a different sort of animal, but the one I’ll cite here is that he, unlike every other subject in this series, refused to let me use my camera. To paint my portraits, I work from photos I take myself of my subjects, so Chance’s adamantly adverse reaction to my noisy camera was a problem, until I remembered the magic of smartphones. I snapped a few pics of this sweet little corgi and thought, not for the first time, that using a smartphone to help me paint, to listen to an audiobook, or to do any number of non-Instagram things is by far the better use of the technology.
