I was walking behind Jackie the first time I saw her, and I immediately honed in on her boots and the work gloves that were hanging out of her back pocket. I was pretty sure she was headed to the creek cleanup like me. As it turned out, we weren’t assigned to the same crew and barely worked together that day, but what little time we had was enough. We talked about tie-dye, since even my grubby clothes are multicolored, as you may have heard, and five months and many walks later we were doing a dye project together with her daughter.
