Though all celebrities are the targets of overly-adoring fans, when I met him, Mark had the very best admirer possible: a twelve year old kid. Weather Boy, as the kid became known at the station, would call Mark to give him hourly updates of the weather near his house.

It’s fascinating to me to look at Mark’s portrait now and see how little paint I used to depict his shirt. In this painting from a year later, the area in the lower right by the collar bone is similarly underworked. In both cases, it’s primed canvas with a light wash on top.
