A few months ago, I got into a conversation with an artist who is also a religious fundamentalist. Since fundamentalists of all kinds are, by definition, difficult to talk with unless you subscribe to the same interpretation of an ancient text as they do, our exchange was somewhat stymied. Still, I did learn a thing or two by engaging with this person, and our conversation also inspired me to make this video.
The more I think about it, the more I realize just how influential this one idea is in the work I make. After all, for me, portraiture is about honoring people and taking time with each of my subjects, which is something that I talk more about here.
