I’ve been doing some reflecting on common questions that I’m asked. There’s a post about what I think of the query “are you still doing your art?” and one for my response to “is Gwenn Seemel a lesbian?”

As a full-time artist I get asked “what do you do all day?” now and again, and, every time, it’s hard to know how to answer, because each day looks pretty different from the last.
I mean, I have habits, for sure. I know how my brain works, and I like to do things that help my grey matter function optimally. For example, words work better for me in the morning, so I do the majority of my writing (like the script for this video, but also press releases or grants or other things) as soon as I wake up. I also know that walking feels good in my body and my brain, so I go for a good amble most days.
Beyond that, though, it’s just a lot of this—a lot of painting—and that happens whenever I feel like it.
What do I do all day?
When you really ask yourself the question—when you do more than list activities—things get absurd pretty quickly.
What do I do all day?
Nothing. I mean, what do any of us actually do? Nothing of any real importance when you think of the vastness of the universe.
I spend my days creating beauty and joy. I make objects that allow others to feel seen and understood, because they’re not the only one who’s noticed a certain thing or felt a certain way. Through that connection, both my audience and I feel more a part of things and more able to enjoy this world.
What do I do all day?
Everything that matters.
