This painting is part of my COVID-across-America road trip series, and it’s the second one that represents a location named for the devil—Devil’s Tower being the first. I can’t say I totally understand the obsession with the devil that the colonial namers of these places had, but it’s clear they liked the devil quite a lot, because they named some completely stunning places after the ruler of the Christian underworld!
